A wild-mannered, Tigress-like, irrepressible force roams the city. She is cunning, fearless and fierce in her determination to save the animals that otherwise fall prey to the enemies all around them –- starvation, abandonment, cars, disease, abusers. Every animal’s life is worth saving to her. There is no challenge she shies away from. There are not many like her -- equal parts beauty and courage, conviction and commitment -- Alex Kyrklund will take on the world to save the life of one dog, one cat, one banged up animal – pet or feral -- that the world otherwise (and unconscienceeably) easily ignores. Kyrklund reaches dangerously deep into the community to save lives … into backyards seemingly impenetrable behind their barbed-wire fences where a dog, cruelly tethered by a few feet of thick chain, has been left to die … into dangerous alleys where cats pick their way past chunks of rat poison to find half-rotten meals of discarded fast food … into crawl spaces beneath crack houses where a litter of puppies await either a slow death or miraculous rescue … into construction sites where bulldozers will go to work the next morning – and bury the nesting grounds of a flock of birds. Some people are out to save some far-off the rain forest. Alex is out to save the life of a city’s mean street jungle that’s right outside our doors. |
